During New Jersey Utility Assistance Week - Atlantic City Electric Says Significant Help Remains Available to Support Customers

Company is urging customers to act now to secure millions of dollars in energy assistance funds

MAYS LANDING, N.J. (June 7, 2022) – As summer quickly approaches and temperatures climb, energy use can increase, leading to higher energy bills. To further assist its customers, Atlantic City Electric is recognizing New Jersey Utility Assistance Week, June 6 - 10, by urging customers to act now to secure the millions of dollars in assistance funding that remains available for those who may be struggling to pay their energy bill.

Atlantic City Electric understands the ongoing challenges customers face and is committed to helping every customer meet their energy needs. Atlantic City Electric also recognizes many customers continue to struggle due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional assistance is now available to customers who apply for energy assistance programs. Customers who apply for these State-sponsored programs by June 14, 2022 will avoid service disconnection and customers who already experienced a disconnection will be reconnected.

"We understand our customers are still facing the challenges of recovering from the pandemic while also dealing with the very real negative impacts of inflation and rising prices for the products and services they are using each day," said Doug Mokoid, region president for Atlantic City Electric. "There are millions of dollars in energy assistance available and we urge every customer to take advantage of these programs to help ensure we can keep service for every customer connected."

"The Murphy Administration has taken important steps to help those who have been unable to pay their utility bills during these difficult times," said New Jersey Board of Public Utilities President, Joseph L. Fiordaliso. "We would urge anyone who is behind on their bills to apply for our expanded assistance programs or contact their utility to set up a payment plan. Under a law recently enacted by Governor Phil Murphy, utility customers cannot have their service disconnected while their assistance application is pending if they apply by June 14."

Atlantic City Electric has helped thousands of customers with individualized payment arrangements, by providing tips and information about how to save energy and money and works closely with its community partners, connecting customers with helpful state and federal energy assistance resources. In 2021, more than 41,500 customers were connected to over $33 million in energy assistance.

Energy assistance programs supporting Atlantic City Electric customers include:

  • The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides grants in varying amounts based on a household's income size, type of fuel, and type of dwelling, with no pay back required. Customers can apply for LIHEAP energy assistance through the Department of Community Affairs website, by contacting their local LIHEAP Agency or by calling 800-510-3102.
  • The Universal Service Fund (USF) helps ensure energy bills are more affordable for eligible customers. Call 800-510-3102 or visit energyassistance.nj.gov for information.
  • New Jersey SHARES is a nonprofit corporation that provides assistance to income eligible customers. Visit njsharesgreen.org or call 866-657-4273.
  • The Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric (PAGE) program provides relief on electric and natural gas bills for low-to moderate income customers experiencing a temporary financial crisis. Customers can call 732-982-8710 or visit njpoweron.org.
  • Lifeline is a utility assistance program that offers $225 to persons who meet certain income guidelines. Utility customers as well as tenants whose utility bills are included in their rent can call 800-792-9745 for details.

Residents also can access the NJ Department of Community Affairs self-screening-tool to help determine what energy assistance benefits they may qualify for and for information regarding the emergency rental assistance program which covers utilities included in rental costs.

In addition to payment arrangements and energy assistance support, Atlantic City Electric  has many programs that can help customers manage their monthly energy bill, including Budget Billing, which averages payments over a 12-month period. The company also offers energy efficiency programs and energy saving information to help customers reduce their energy usage.
