MAYS LANDING, N.J. (March 22, 2018) – Winter Storm Toby's heavy, wet snow and strong winds continued to result in service interruptions through the night for Atlantic City Electric customers across southern New Jersey. The fourth major nor'easter in March has resulted in major tree and electric infrastructure damage in parts of Atlantic City Electric's service area.
"Our crews are navigating extreme conditions, including major tree damage, downed utility poles and wires and other challenges as they work to restore service to our customers," said Vince Maione, Atlantic City Electric region president. "We understand it is difficult to be without electric service, but we assure our customers we will not stop until their service is restored."
As of noon Thursday, hundreds of resources are working across southern New Jersey to restore service to about 40,000 Atlantic City Electric customers. Crews have already restored service to more than 75,000 customers since the damaging storm began. Based on the current damage, service is expected to be restored for most customers by late tonight. Customers in the most damaged areas, including parts of Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties, should be restored late Friday night.
To provide support for those customers who are without electric service, Atlantic City Electric is joining with the American Red Cross and the Cumberland and Gloucester County Offices of Emergency Management to open warming centers today until 7 p.m. Warming stations will have Atlantic City Electric representatives at each location. Bottled water, coffee and phone charging stations will be available at the following locations:
Cumberland County: Gloucester County:
Buckshutem Road School Franklinville Community Center
550 Buckshutem Road 584 Coles Mill Road
Bridgeton, N.J. 08302 Franklinville, N.J. 08332
In addition to more than 500 Atlantic City Electric line workers, local contractors, and tree crews, hundreds of additional resources from Atlantic City Electric's sister utilities Delmarva Power, Pepco, ComEd, and PECO have joined the effort, from as far as Illinois, to restore service to customers.
Crews and office support personnel will continue to work around the clock in 12- to 16-hour shifts, until all damage has been repaired and all service has been restored. Atlantic City Electric's entire Emergency Response Organization has been mobilized with all company resources dedicated to restoring service for customers as safely and efficiently as possible.
Customers can visit Atlantic City Electric's website at www.atlanticcityelectric.com, use our mobile app, or contact the company at 1-800-833-7476 for the latest estimate of when service will be restored to their home. It is important for customers to understand that these estimates can, and do, change. Estimated restoration times are based on current conditions and damage. When crews arrive on site and assess damage for a particular outage, the crew will provide an updated estimated restoration time. The company then continues to update the estimated restoration time as crews complete their work. Restoration times for specific outages may change frequently.
Atlantic City Electric remains focused on the safety of employees, customers, and the communities it serves. As work continues, Atlantic City Electric urges customers to take precautions for their safety; stay away from downed power lines and report them to Atlantic City Electric immediately. Check on neighbors, friends, the elderly and others who may be without service. Exercise caution when using generators to power your home and never use a generator, grill, or other similar devices indoors or in an attached garage.
As crews continue to restore service, Atlantic City Electric thanks its customers for their patience and understanding.
