MAYS LANDING, N.J. (March 23, 2018) – Just over 36 hours after Winter Storm Toby moved out of southern New Jersey, Atlantic City Electric has restored the vast majority of all customers impacted by this third damaging nor'easter in March. More than 2,200 personnel continue working around the clock to restore service to all customers impacted during, and after the storm.
Major tree damage, broken poles, downed wires and damaged electric equipment are just a few of the many challenges facing crews as they perform their important work to repair the local energy grid.
Field crews from Atlantic City Electric's sister utilities Delmarva Power, Pepco, ComEd, and PECO, along with resources from New Jersey utilities PSE&G and JCP&L, are working alongside Atlantic City Electric and local contractors as part of the massive restoration effort.
As of noon, Friday, less than 7,500 Atlantic City Electric customers, who were impacted by the storm, remain without service. In addition, approximately 3,500 customers were also impacted after the storm and are currently without power. Even after the heavy, wet snow stopped falling, additional outages continued to occur due to falling trees and tree limbs that brought down wires and damaged equipment. We expect to have the majority of costumers restored today or overnight. Some customers, who experienced outages after the storm, can expect to have their service restored sometime Saturday.
Customers in the areas that experienced the most significant damage, including parts of Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties, should have their service restored today or overnight. Many major pieces of electrical equipment have already been repaired. Much of this remaining work on the system is extremely labor intensive and time consuming. As crews continue to restore service, Atlantic City Electric thanks its customers for their patience and understanding.
To provide support for those customers who are without electric service, Atlantic City Electric is joining with the American Red Cross and the Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management to open a warming center until 4 p.m. today at the Pfeiffer Community Center, 310 Blue Bell Road, Williamstown, NJ 08094. Bottled water, coffee and phone charging stations will be available for residents.
Customers can visit Atlantic City Electric's website at www.atlanticcityelectric.com, use our mobile app, or contact the company at 1-800-833-7476 for the latest estimate of when service will be restored to their home or to report a downed wire. It is important for customers to understand that these estimates can, and do, change. Estimated restoration times are based on current conditions and damage.
Atlantic City Electric remains focused on the safety of employees, customers, and the local communities. As work continues, Atlantic City Electric urges customers to take precautions for their safety; stay away from downed power lines and report them to Atlantic City Electric immediately.
