Atlantic City Electric Donates Funds to Big Brothers Big Sisters

Company's Golf Classic Event Raised $123,000 for South Jersey Nonprofit Groups

MAYS LANDING, NJ - Representatives of Atlantic City Electric presented $41,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties, and BBBS of Cumberland and Salem counties during a recent presentation at the Salem Middle School, Salem NJ. A portion of the donation will be used to fund the BBBS Adult School Based Program held at Salem Middle School.

The BBBS Adult School Based Program takes place within the school setting once per week during lunch time in which a BBBS mentor or "Big" meets with a student or "Little." The goal of the program is that through talking, playing games and sharing interests, a friendship is formed during this one to one mentoring, and that the "Little" reaches his/her full potential in school and everyday life through the "Big's" guidance, support and encouragement.

"We thank Atlantic City Electric and BBBS for their support and for recognizing Salem Middle School for our dedication to our students," said Randi Griffin, a teacher at Salem Middle School and BBBS mentor. "I speak for the majority of our team when I say we love what we do. The students are our drive and inspiration. BBBS has fused bonds with our teachers and students that are immeasurable."

Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring professionally supported relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. BBBS mentoring programs set the standard for mentoring best practices in the country delivering high impact for the children it serves. The community based mentoring and school based mentoring programs served over 900 youth in Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties in 2012.

Through its Eighth Annual Charity Golf Classic held in September, 2013, Atlantic City Electric raised approximately $123,000 to support Big Brothers Big Sisters; Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) For Children; and the Val Skinner Foundation - LIFE LPGA Pros in the Fight.

"We are pleased that once again that the dollars raised by this annual event will provide much needed financial assistance to very worthwhile social service groups," said Susan Coan, Vice President, Atlantic City Electric. "This fundraising effort was coordinated through our company's Community Foundation which targets money to organizations that help support our communities in the areas of health, youth development, education and low income advocacy."

Since its inception in 2006, the Pepco Holdings, Inc. Community Foundation's Atlantic City Electric Golf Classic has raised more than $970,000 for nonprofit organizations in South Jersey.

BBBS is actively seeking volunteers who would like to participate in its Adult School Based Program and be a mentor to a Salem Middle School student. Currently there are 20 students on the program's waiting list.
