MAYS LANDING, N.J. - Representatives of Atlantic City Electric recently presented a $44,000 donation to Gateway Community Action Partnership in support of Gateway's Adult Literacy Program at Atlantic City Electric's Carneys Point Office, Carneys Point, New Jersey.
As part of the event, Gateway's Literacy Volunteers of Salem and Cumberland counties as well program participants, shared testimonials and success stories. More than 70 adults have benefited from Gateway's Adult Literacy Program in 2012.
"I am grateful for the literacy program and my tutor for helping me to learn how to read and write," said Brendon Caffo, of Salem, who joined Gateway's Adult Literacy Program in October, 2012. "I'd like a career in construction and carpentry and this program will help me achieve my goals."
"We believe everyone should have the opportunity to read. Through one-on-one mentoring, literacy volunteers strive to improve the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of adults in Salem and Cumberland counties who read at or below the sixth grade level," said Laura Weber, Coordinator, Literacy Volunteers of Salem and Cumberland counties.
Gateway's Adult Literacy Program is affiliated with Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey and accredited by ProLiteracy. It's one of many programs offered by Gateway Community Action Partnership designed to improve quality of life and promote self-sufficiency.
Gateway also presented Atlantic City Electric with the Dr. Frank D. Brigio Memorial Spirit of the Community Award during the event. Named after the late Dr. Frank D. Brigio, former Gateway CAP Board Chairman, the award is presented to an individual or company who exhibits exemplary involvement in the community.
