Free Service Helps Maintain Safety When It Comes to Digging

That nationwide phone number connects you to a free service that will arrange for someone to come to your home or business to clearly mark all underground utilities so you will be able to dig safely. New Jersey also offers an internet based program called ITIC (Internet Ticketing). Just go to the website, www.njonecall.com and click "ITIC" and simply fill out the information. "Since tomorrow is August 11, we hope the date on the calendar of 8/11 will serve as a reminder for homeowners and contractors to call 8-1-1 before starting any digging project," said Vince Maione, Atlantic City Electric Region President. "Calling 8-1-1 before digging will help avoid fines and angry neighbors if a line is damaged and cuts off electric or gas service. But, more importantly, knowing where it's safe to dig will avoid an accident that could result in injury or death." Whether it's a homeowner planting a tree or building a fence or a contractor doing some major work, by law, the underground utility locating service must be called first and the mark out will be completed within three days.
