Company Contacts Federal Law Enforcement about Fake Billing Claims
MAYS LANDING, N.J. - Atlantic City Electric is warning customers about a scam involving prepaid "Green Dot" Visa credit cards. Callers claiming to represent the utility have contacted customers telling them their electric service is scheduled to be shut off and they should make a payment by purchasing a "Green Dot" VISA card. Customers are then asked to call another phone number where information is obtained from the credit card and the monetary value is removed from the "Green Dot" VISA card.
Atlantic City Electric Security reports that five customers have called to notify the company of this "suspicious" and unauthorized contact.
"We have contacted federal law enforcement to provide the information we have about this scam," said Vincent Maione, Atlantic City Electric Region President. "We want to inform our customers so they can guard against these types of calls. Atlantic City Electric would never call customers and ask them to obtain a specific payment instrument and then ask them to call us back at another number with the information.
"We encourage customers to ask questions to verify the legitimacy of any caller claiming to be an Atlantic City Electric customer service representative," Maione added. "If they have concerns, they can hang up and call the company directly to verify the contact."
Atlantic City Electric customer service representatives always will be able to provide the name on a customer's account, the account address, and the exact past due balance. If a caller cannot provide that information, it is very likely the call is not from an Atlantic City Electric employee. In this case, customers should not provide any type of payment or financial information. They should call Atlantic City Electric Customer Service immediately at 800-642-3780 and also call local law enforcement to report the incident.
