Customers Can Enroll to Help Reduce Peak Usage
MAYS LANDING, N.J. - Atlantic City Electric's Energy Wise Rewards Program continues to help residential customers save energy and money. The program is being phased in throughout the company's service territory. It began in Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties with plans to offer enrollment to all South Jersey counties later this year. Energy Wise Rewards is the company's Direct Load Control Program which was approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities in 2009.
During summer periods of peak electric demand, Energy Wise Rewards works to reduce electricity usage by "cycling" central air conditioner compressors off and on for short periods of time during summer days with high electric demand. The program will help prevent power outages and reduce carbon emissions.
Energy Wise Rewards offers customers a choice of a programmable thermostat or digital cycling unit, installed by its contractor, Comverge, Inc., at no additional cost. Residential customer participation is entirely voluntary, with a one-time bill credit of $50 dollars following the installation of a device.
This program already has provided Atlantic City Electric with the capability to reduce peak load by nearly 15 megawatts, which reduces the strain on the electric distribution system and improves reliability of service on hot days. This was achieved by the installation of approximately 13,000 energy saving devices. The program also created 12 full-time jobs in New Jersey. By the end of 2014, the company expects to have more than 42,000 devices installed, thus reducing peak load by 50 megawatts
