Atlantic City Electric Supports 2008 Coastal Cleanup

Volunteers needed to remove trash

MAYS LANDING, N.J. - Atlantic City Electric will join forces with environmental, civic and business organizations throughout the region to support the annual Coastal Cleanup this fall. The effort aims to remove trash from beaches and riverbanks in New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.

Volunteers are needed to clean up 59 sites in the three states. In New Jersey, one site in Cumberland County will be cleaned up on Saturday, Sept. 20, while four locations in Atlantic and Cape May counties will be cleaned up on Saturday, Oct. 18. (See list below for specific information on cleanup locations, dates and times).

"It is important to keep our beaches and waterways clean because those areas represent valuable environmental and economic resources to residents of New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland," said Ken Parker, President of the Atlantic City Electric Region. "Atlantic City Electric's sponsorship and participation in Coastal Cleanup demonstrates our company's strong and unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship."

The regional Coastal Cleanup is part of International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit group that works to protect the world's oceans. The types and quantities of trash collected will be itemized. The data will then be used to pinpoint the source of debris, as well as focus on ways to reduce or eliminate waste.

In last year's cleanup, 2,500 volunteers collected approximately 35,000 pounds of trash. Typical debris picked up included cigarette butts, beverage containers, food wrappers and fishing gear. Some of the more unusual items included a lawn chair, lamp shade, stereo speaker and car parts.

Atlantic City Electric, a public utility owned by Pepco Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: POM), provides safe, reliable and affordable regulated electric delivery services to more than 545,000 customers in southern New Jersey.
