Atlantic City Electric Helps South Jersey Celebrate Earth Day

Mays Landing, N.J. - To help celebrate Earth Day, Atlantic City Electric plans to distribute free, white dogwood tree seedlings this month at environmental events in Cape May and Gloucester counties. The utility company also is a sponsor again this year for Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweeps in Atlantic and Cape May counties.

"The tree seedlings are our gifts to the public and to Earth Day 2007," said Charles Wimberg, Atlantic City Electric Region Vice President. "We encourage recipients to plant and nurture the donated seedlings because healthy, mature trees can help improve air quality and prevent soil erosion."

The gift of the trees also provides an opportunity to remind people to be aware of the location of overhead and underground electric wires.

Trees growing into power lines can cause electric service interruptions, and digging into underground lines can result in electric shock and injury. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the dogwood seedlings Atlantic City Electric is distributing are a low-growing species that is less likely to interfere with power lines, thus helping the utility maintain electric service reliability.

"We also encourage southern New Jersey residents to take a morning off from household chores or errands and join Clean Ocean Action at the beach on April 28," Wimberg said.  Atlantic City Electric is sponsoring the beach clean up in Brigantine, Atlantic City and Sea Isle City.

Support of Earth Day is just one way in which Atlantic City Electric is committed to environmental stewardship. Throughout the year, the utility company works in partnership with environmental and community groups on a variety of programs that benefit the environment. These programs include beach and river cleanups, wildlife habitat preservation, tree maintenance and initiatives to support the replenishment of bird and fish populations.
