Stormy Weather on the Way
Tips to Help Prepare for Possible Power Outages

Mays Landing, N.J. - Atlantic City Electric is tracking the remnants of Tropical Storm Wilma as well as a weather front that is moving into our region from the west. Over the next 24 hours this combined storm could bring high winds and additional significant amounts of rainfall to the region already saturated by recent rains. That combination of we ground and wind increases the probability of trees toppling into power lines causing power outages. Atlantic City Electric offers the following tips to help you prepare and stay safe.

  • Remember that in restoring power, Atlantic City Electric's first priority is safety.
  • Never touch a downed or damaged power line.
  • Do not attempt to move downed or damaged power lines with branches, boards, etc.
  • Be prepared and keep a storm survival kit ready. Include drinking water, non-perishable foods, and fresh batteries.
  • Do not connect portable electric generators to household wiring without the proper equipment to isolate the home from the local power system. This will help prevent energizing the local system and risking injury or death to others who are near or working on the system. Connect appliances directly to the generator with an extension cord.
  • Operate generators according to operator's manual. Run portable generators outside to properly ventilate exhaust.
  • To aid in restoration, turn off major appliances, such as washing machines, ovens and stoves. This will help reduce a sudden demand on the system when power is restored.
  • To prevent damage to appliances, you can unplug them. Remember that Atlantic City Electric is not liable for losses caused by storm-related power outages or other acts of nature.
  • Avoid opening refrigerator and freezer doors during an outage to prevent food from spoiling.
  • Avoid using the telephone during a storm to avoid a risk of electrical contact.
  • Report power outages to Atlantic City Electric at 1-800-833-7476.
