Ice Storm Leaves Thousands in the Dark; More Ice Expected

Conectiv Power Delivery, responding to a plea for assistance, is sending crews to northeastern Pennsylvania where a devastating ice storm Thursday left thousands of utility customers in the dark.

A second ice storm is forecast this weekend and PPL Electric Utilities of Allentown, Pa., asked for additional help from utilities throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Conectiv's sister company, Washington, D.C.-based Pepco, also sent crews to assist in the power restoration effort.

Specifically, Conectiv sent approximately 28 personnel while Pepco sent approximately 40 personnel along with their vehicles and equipment.

"We're fortunate not to have been hit by the storm and so we are able to free some of our crews to help out," said Conectiv's Vice President of Customer Relations Gary Stockbridge. He added that PPL, in conjunction with other northeastern utilities, have a history of answering Conectiv's call when it needs assistance after a major storm.

More sleet and freezing rain is expected tonight and tomorrow morning for the badly hit area of Carbon, Monroe, and Schuylkill counties. At last check, more than 35,000 PPL and 65,000 MetEd customers were still without power after Thursday's ice storm brought down power lines throughout the region.
