Utility Awards Educational Grants to Two Local Schools

MAYS LANDING, N.J. – Fernwood Middle School, Egg Harbor Township, and West Cape May Elementary School, West Cape May, are the 2012-2013 Atlantic City Electric Educational Grant Program recipients. Atlantic City Electric awarded a $2,500 grant to Fernwood Middle School and a $2,100 grant to West Cape May Elementary School.

Fernwood Middle School will implement its Eco-Energy Buddies Program. The program will pair Egg Harbor Township High School students with their “Eco-Energy Buddy” middle school students to engage in activities that promote renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, as well as ways to conserve energy in homes, schools and the community. West Cape May Elementary will engage students in learning activities including creating solar powered cars and windmills, and how generators convert potential energy sources into electrical energy for human consumption. The students will also learn about fossil fuels and the need to conserve energy.

“Atlantic City Electric supports innovative programs that educate students on topics including energy efficiency, safety and environment protection,” said Ronnie Town, Senior Public Affairs Manager, Atlantic City Electric. “We’re pleased to assist in funding the initiatives that the Fernwood Middle School and West Cape May Elementary School will be implementing.”

Through Atlantic City Electric’s Educational Grant Program, schools can apply for a grant up to $2,500 to support educational programs and/or innovative projects including electrical safety, wise energy use, local alternative energy sources, environmental impact, economic implications and energy-related science content.

Since 2009, the Atlantic City Electric Educational Grant Program has donated more than $18,000 to schools throughout its service area.
