MAYS LANDING, N.J. — Representatives of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Atlantic City and Gloucester County, and Wow! Science Camp attended a STEM Club Training Summit on Sept. 2 to learn important skills that bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education to life year- round. The summit was hosted in partnership between Atlantic City Electric, Discovery Education and  Boys & Girls Clubs, and held at Discovery Communications’ headquarters in Silver Spring, Md.

The Atlantic City Electric STEM Club uses standards-aligned curriculum and engaging project-based learning to prepare fifth-through eighth-grade students for career opportunities in STEM. Led by Discovery Education experts, the training summit provided after-school facilitators from participating Boys & Girls Clubs and Wow! Science Camp with tools and resources to excite and inspire students about the world of STEM.

“This is the second year of the Atlantic City Electric partnership with Discovery Education and the Boys & Girls Clubs that brings a life changing program to middle school students in southern New Jersey,” said Debbi Jarvis, vice president, corporate citizenship and social responsibility, Pepco Holdings Inc. “We’re helping to prepare young people who could be future employees at Atlantic City Electric.”

“We are excited to again partner with Discovery Education to provide STEM education to Boys & Girls Club and Wow! Science Camp, which will then provide this vital information to the young people each serves,” said Vince Maione, Atlantic City Electric region president. “We want to engage kids in learning these important skills in a fun environment to help ensure a brighter future.”

The training will increase the ability of the afterschool facilitators to use the provided curriculum and engage young students who may not otherwise be exposed to the dynamic and exciting world of STEM. Well-trained facilitators are better equipped to encourage and guide students who pursue technology-based careers. Through the STEM curriculum, urban youth experience how science, technology, engineering and math play significant roles in their lives.

“Discovery Education is extremely proud to continue our partnership with Atlantic City Electric, the Boys & Girls Clubs and Wow! Science Camp to provide students with an engaging afterschool experience that builds critical STEM skills to help prepare them for college, careers and global citizenship,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president, Discovery Education. “The Atlantic City Electric STEM Club aims to help students launch and sustain successful careers in a workforce increasingly driven by technology, consequently contributing to the well-being of their communities.”
