Utility Reminds Customers To Check With Us First

MAYS LANDING, N.J. - Atlantic City Electric supports “authorized” solar system installations within its service territory that allow unused power to be sold back to the power grid. The utility reminds customers, as a precaution, to submit an application for approval to Atlantic City Electric before making any investments in such systems.

Some of our circuits have reached capacity and can’t accommodate new solar projects, but we are working with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and are committed to exploring options to increase the number of customers we can connect to our system,” said Atlantic City Electric Vice President Robert Revelle.

Customers contemplating installing solar energy equipment should first submit an application to Atlantic City Electric for approval to interconnect their system. This requirement ensures safety and compatibility with our electrical system. It also ensures that Atlantic City Electric continues to meet the BPU’s stringent technical, safety and reliability requirements. The Company’s Green Power Connection ™ team will review the application and determine acceptance prior to installation and operation. Here's how a “Net Energy Metered” system works:

    · On days when you produce more energy than you need, your electric meter runs in reverse, reflecting the energy you're sending back to the regional power grid. In cases when you need to draw energy from the grid, your meter runs as it normally would.

    · Your monthly Atlantic City Electric bill will include the standard customer charges. However, in the energy supply portion of the bill, you will be charged for the “net” amount of energy used. That means we first subtract the kilowatt-hours of electricity produced from the amount you used – resulting in a lower bill from Atlantic City Electric.

If you're interested in generating your own electricity, here are some helpful hints to get you started:

    · Research the types of systems available to you. Customers should know that their renewable energy-generating system can be sized to meet all, or part, of their overall energy needs.

    · When your research is final, decide which type of system is best suited to meet your energy needs.

    · Interview and select a reputable installing contractor who will typically handle the application process, any rebate forms, permits, inspections, etc.

Keep in mind that Atlantic City Electric does not sell or install renewable generation systems. Please feel free to call us with any additional questions and we will try to help you through the process.
